An Australia mother named Allyson McConnell admitted drowning her two young sons 10-month-old Jayden and two-year-old Connor in the bathtub of the family's home in Millot, Alberta, in February 2010.
However, she has entered not guilty pleas to two counts of second-degree murder.
In 2005, McConnell moved from New South Wales central coast to Canada and married with a Canadian man Curtis McConnell. But the marriage deteriorated. McConnell was angry with her estranged husband and wanted to take their sons back to Australia.
McConnell's friend Marless Lizenberger thought McConnell was a good mother and she became "stressed" with the marriage troubles.
Mr McConnell filed a $C940,000($905,785) civil suit against his former wife, told the court that he believed she had killed her sons to hurt him.
Prosecutors said the case would focus on whether McConnell, who is being held on suicide watch in a mental helth ward at an Alberta hospital, had the intent required to be convicted of murder.
The trial continues.
